Welcome to the Open Health Registry for Golden Retrievers. The purpose of this registry is to allow health information on individual dogs, positive and negative, to be tracked over generations. We hope that making this information available to breeders will allow them to reduce the incidence of genetic disease over time, improve longevity and generally breed healthier dogs. Many factors, including genetics, affect the health and longevity of an individual dog. Some aspects of inherited diseases or defects seem straightforward, but many are not, nor is heritability perfectly understood today. We urge you to make the effort to gain a fundamental knowledge of genetic principles, including population genetics, before basing a breeding or buying decision on health information about an ancestor or related dog. Your decisions, and your dogs, will be better for the time you spend learning about the principles of inheritance. As always, if you have questions about an individual dog, seek answers from the breeder or owner. Open discussion of health matters is the underlying principle of this registry and essential to the future of our breed.
