Dog Clubs and their Health Organizations

American Kennel Club

The AKC website includes a wealth of information for the general public as well as for the serious fancier. Information is included on recognized breeds, clubs, events, downloadable forms and booklets, Canine Good Citizen tests, public service announcements, and much more.

Canine Health Foundation

An offshoot of the American Kennel Club, the Canine Health Foundation is focused on fundraising and health research. Their website has health information by disease and breed, articles and white papers, and information on genetic tests and sponsored research. Links are provided to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and to the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC).

Golden Retriever Club of America

Almost 5,000 members strong, GRCA is made up of 54 local member clubs all over the United States and is the AKC parent breed club for Golden Retrievers. It has a strong focus on health concerns in the breed, and education for members and judges. Their website includes links to local clubs, reports on health research sponsored by the GRCA and the Golden Retriever Foundation, information on committees (such as rescue) and other club business. In addition to many local events held all year long by the member clubs, GRCA annually holds national and regional dog shows, obedience trials, tracking tests, working certificate tests, hunt tests and an annual Golden Retrievers only field trial. The Club also publishes a large bi-montly magazine, the Golden Retriever News.

Golden Retriever Foundation

The GRF is a 501c3 offshoot of the Golden Retriever Club of America. This organization is responsible for funding health research and rescue efforts for the breed.

Flat-Coated Retriever Health Manual

Provided by the Flat-Coated Retriever Society of America. The FCRSA provides their complete health manual online. A print version can be ordered at a nominal price. Section One includes articles of general interest such as "Why we have open registries." Section Two covers broad topics such as behavioral problems, hemangiosarcoma, hip dysplasia, and non-malignant tumors. Appendices link to veterinary and internet resources, and registries.

Canine Health Disorders Database

Provided by Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. Designed for use by dog breeders, dog owners, potential dog owners and veterinarians. Inherited disorders are grouped by body system. Coverage includes a description of the condition, mode of inheritance, consequences of the conditions, and recommendations for care and treatment.

GenScope

Provided by The Concord Consortium funded by grants from the National Science Foundation. This is a hands-on teaching tool that allows users to learn about genetic principles through direct experimentation and manipulation of data. The site provides information on their research, as well as a downloadable program.

Provided by Sue Ann Bowling (Sheltie Bloodlines site). Bowling provides an extended bibliography of materials on genetics in general, canine genetics, and breed-specific materials. Some articles are directly linked, other references are to books.

Canine Genetics Research at VGL

Provided by the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory of University of California (Davis) School of Veterinary Medicine. The VGL focuses on canine genome studies especially as they relate to health and performance. There is a good article on "What's involved in developing a genetic test." Contacts needs to be made with the VGL directly as their site does not provide research results.

Canine Diversity Project

The Canine Diversity Project is dedicated to making breeders aware of the dangers of inbreeding and limited gene pools. Links are provided to articles on longevity, genetics for breeders, fertility issues, pedigree analysis, DNA tests, loss of diversity and other topics.
